First developed in the 1950s, laser technology has evolved over the decades to become a key part of our lives. We use lasers in medicine, manufacturing, defence, and even things like laser light shows and movie special effects!
Although there are countless types out there, medical-use lasers can be loosely sorted into one of two categories: hot or cold. Hot lasers are typically used for surgical applications, while cold lasers are used for less invasive medical treatments.
Thanks to our years of experience, the team at Illusion Laser Clinic have an in-depth understanding of all types of laser technology. Read on for our guide to the qualities of hot and cold lasers, what they’re typically used for, and the pros and cons of each!
A cold laser, also known as a Class 2 or 3 laser, is a low-power laser used to stimulate healing in damaged tissues. This process is known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT).
Unlike surgical lasers, which use high-power beams to cut or vaporise tissue, cold lasers emit a low-intensity beam that doesn’t generate heat and isn’t strong enough to damage cells. The laser light is absorbed by the cells in the targeted area, promoting cellular metabolism and circulation, reducing inflammation, and accelerating the natural healing process.
Cold lasers are typically used for non-invasive treatments such as laser tattoo removal, topical pain treatment, and body contouring.
A hot laser (or Class 4 laser) has a power output above 500 milliwatts (mW). They’re called ‘hot’ because they can rapidly increase the temperature of body tissue.
At a lower power range, hot lasers are used to treat pain through tissue and muscle relaxation – this is called high-intensity laser therapy (HILT). Higher-intensity hot lasers are much more powerful and are used during surgery to cut tissue, seal blood vessels, and vaporise tumours.
Hot lasers are powerful tools used in various surgical and industrial applications. Here are their potential pros and cons:
